What is the State Board of Education & what are they responsible for? The Nevada State Board of Education adopts regulations based on Nevada laws, which are passed down to individual school districts in Nevada to implement. The Board has 11 total (7 appointed and 4 publicly elected) members.
How often does the State Board meet? The Nevada State Board of Education meets once per month on Wednesdays at 9:00 AM. Click here to see the 2026 meeting materials.
Can community members engage at State Board Meetings? A time for public comment is provided at the beginning (for agenda items) and at the conclusion (on any matter) of each Board meeting. Members of the public may provide public comment in writing via email; public comment will be accepted via email for the duration of the meeting and shared with the State Board of Education during the public comment periods. President's Report
Highlights included:
- A moment of recognition for State Senator Joyce Woodhouse
- Board Member Updates:
- Board goal-setting process: At the Board's recent retreat, they determined categories for goals: third grade literacy, universal Pre-K, eighth grade math, career and college readiness, and streamlining requirements for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Student voice across the districts: CCSD, WCSD, and Nye County all have student advisory councils, and several other counties have student representatives on their respective boards.
- Extending an invitation to the Board for the 2026 Nevada Superintendents Academy, occurring June 8-9 in Lake Tahoe.
- At-Risk Subcommittee: The Subcommittee met informally with Commission on School Funding members to discuss updates to their work, with additional conversations regarding upcoming legislative recommendations from the Commission forthcoming.
Superintendent's Report
Highlights included:
- Recognition of Member Lan at her final meeting as student representative
- A moment of remembrance for State Senator Joyce Woodhouse
- Commitment to the priorities of strategic plans, deepening connections, fiscal stewardship, and policy and budget alignment
- Benchmarks for August 1, including an updated Statewide Plan for the Improvement of Pupils and the Department's bill draft requests and 2027-29 biennial budget proposal
- Department Updates: 36 new Purple Star Schools across the state, Indian Education Summit hosted by NDE, and two Washoe County School District campuses recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools
- Other updates include district planning grants, Teacher Appreciation Week, launching the NDE Talent and Leadership Initiative, District Performance Framework, a high program readiness rating for Nevada for the Effective Pathways program, and presentations to the Joint Interim Standing Committee on Education.
- Several regulatory hearings taking place on May 20 and June 24, and several anticipated workshops this summer

Board Heard an Update on the Developmental Delay Exit Age Criteria and Related Information for Future Consideration
The Board received a presentation on the Developmental Delay (DD) exit age criteria, including survey results compiled and reviewed by the Department on the topic. There remains a lack of longitudinal quantitative data across districts. Needs identified by districts to increase the age threshold included training, additional resources and funding, as well as staffing adjustments. An implementation roadmap of next steps was also presented, including reviewing further stakeholder engagement and implementation planning. A motion to increase the DD exit age to nine was not passed, and the Board will hear the item again at a future meeting.

Board Received an Update and Timeline on Read by Grade 3 Implementation
The Board received an update on the implementation of Read by Grade 3 (RBG3). assessment. This included key milestones such as approving the alternative standardized reading assessment and passing scores, finalizing communications and support strategies for retention, and driving uniform and alternate assessment among LEAs. Staff also provided an update on implementation and support for instruction, assessments, and communications to families. Required activities are bucketed into strategic review (March – July 2026), approving an alternate exam (September 2026 – May 2027), and approving passing scores (June – September 2027).
Upcoming touch points include an overview of the RBG3 retention law on June 24 and an initial data review on July 29.

Board Received an Update on the Nevada Educator Performance Framework (NEPF) Redesign Field Study Year 2 and Approved a Recommendation
The Board received an update on Year Two of the NEPF Redesign Field Study, and implementation of the revised rubrics, tools, and summative evaluation scoring for teachers and administrators. There were 13 total interviews and 195 survey respondents across five districts. Following the feedback review, Department staff recommended implementing the NEPF Redesign statewide for the 2026-27 school year. The Board voted to approve the implementation for the 2026-27 school year.

Board Reviewed and Provided Feedback on the Statewide Assessment RFP
The Board reviewed and provided feedback on the proposed scope of work, evaluation criteria, and evaluation committee composition for the statewide assessment RFP. Next steps for the scope of work included:
- Vendor being able to provide a presentation to the Committee to be able to conduct a Q & A period
- Adding in a component to be able to compare previous vendor scores to ensure the integrity of longitudinal data
- Including student practice tests and descriptions of aligned systems
Next steps for the rubric included:
- Providing for scoring of the live presentation, contingency planning for data back-ups and stability during peak performance times
- Alignment with federal peer review and Nevada Academic Content Standards
- Ability to compare previous vendor scores to ensure the integrity of longitudinal data
Next steps for the committee included:
- Expanding the committee to ensure a diversity of viewpoints, including vendor experience, grade band expertise, testing design and expertise, and those not in state roles
A final vote will take place on June 24.

Future Agenda Items
Suggestions for future agenda items include a presentation from the Commission on School Funding, further discussion on the Developmental Disability exit age, and a presentation regarding the Education Services Center.
The next meeting of the State Board of Education will be held on Wednesday, June 24, at 9:00 a.m.
