Washoe County School District Board of Trustees

What is the Board of Trustees & what are they responsible for? The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees are publicly elected decision-makers for the school district. They are responsible for providing oversight to the Superintendent and establishing District-wide policy. Trustees are accountable to work with their communities to improve student achievement.

How often does the Board of Trustees meet? Trustees meet twice per month (second and fourth Tuesdays) at 2 pm both virtually and at the Central Administration Building Board Room, 425 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.

Can community members engage at Trustee meetings? Decision-making bodies benefit greatly from hearing public input and multiple perspectives. Currently, members of the public can submit comments on agenda and non-agenda items through email or voice recording. Public comment can be provided in person or via email. Email comments should be submitted to publiccomments@washoeschools.net.

Trustees Received a Presentation to Celebrate the Start of the 2025-26 School Year with Introductions of New School Principals and Voices from Students, Staff and Families

 Trustees received a presentation to celebrate the start of the 2025-26 school year with introductions of new school principals and voices from students, staff, and families from various schools throughout Washoe County School District.

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • Overview of incoming new school leadership
  • Nine new WCSD principals

Trustees Received a Presentation on an Overview of the Academic Accomplishments and Highlights from the 2024-25 School Year

 Trustees received a presentation on an overview of the academic accomplishments and highlights from the 2024-25 school year.

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • Single largest one-year increase since the Smarter Balanced Assessment began in 2015-16
  • Grades 3, 4, and 5 are all at or above pre-pandemic performance in ELA
  • Increases in feeling of value/optimism about WCSD’s future and 17% increase in participation rate

Trustees directed the Superintendent to make the amendments for the Amendment of Board Policy 4500, District Employee Speech

Trustees directed the Superintendent to make the amendments to Board Policy 4500 (specifically pertaining to item 2b), District Employee Speech and initiation of the 13-day public review and comment period.

Trustees Approved Changes to the WCSD Group Health Insurance Plan for the 2026 Plan Year

Trustees approved changes to the Washoe County School District’s group health insurance plan for the 2026 plan year to include a premium rate increase of up to 10% for the 2026 plan year with possible offsets from changes to plan benefits such as increasing deductibles and/or increasing copays, and consideration of the recommendation of the group insurance committee for a 7.5% rate increase for the 2026 plan year.

Student Representative’s Report

Report highlights included:

  • Introducing new student representative Maya Hartley
  • Primary focuses of this year are on chronic absenteeism, emotional support, and AI policies

  • Trustee Nicolette attended WCSD kick-off academy for administrators and several back-to-school/kick-off activities.
  • Several Trustees visited schools for their first day celebrations.
