What is the Board of Trustees & what are they responsible for? The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees are publicly elected decision-makers for the school district. They are responsible for providing oversight to the Superintendent and establishing District-wide policy. Trustees are accountable to work with their communities to improve student achievement.

How often does the Board of Trustees meet? Trustees meet twice per month (second and fourth Tuesdays) at 2 pm both virtually and at the Central Administration Building Board Room, 425 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.

Can community members engage at Trustee meetings? Decision-making bodies benefit greatly from hearing public input and multiple perspectives. Currently, members of the public can submit comments on agenda and non-agenda items through email or voice recording. Public comment can be provided in person or via email. Email comments should be submitted to publiccomments@washoeschools.net.

Trustees Approved the Consent Agenda

Trustees Adopted Washoe County School District Board Resolution 26-019, a Resolution Acquiring School Buses and Other Support Vehicles for the District
Trustees adopted Washoe County School District Board Resolution 26-019, a resolution authorizing the issuance of up to $3,500,00 of medium-term obligations for the purpose of acquiring school buses and other support vehicles for the District; and directing the Chief Financial Officer to forward materials to the Department of Taxation of the State of Nevada.
Highlights of the presentation included:
- Staff members from the vocational training program at Transition Academy spoke on the importance of the transportation services for their students, and concern that many of the current fleet vehicles in use are typically older models that draw concern for student and staff safety.
- A concern from trustees was that many staff vehicles are typically the newer modeled vehicles distributed, while schools like Transition Academy use the older models within the fleet.
- The response from the Chief Financial Officer regarding the safety of the fleet was that an in-house team of trusted mechanics and continued practice of the risk-management plan.

Trustees Received a Presentation and Approved the Goals for the Safe and Healthy Schools Commission (SHSC) for the 2026-27 School Year
Trustees received a presentation and approved the goals for the Safe and Healthy Schools Commission (SHSC) and to consider the recommendations pertaining to Bathroom Safety and Substance Use Prevention.
Highlights of the program included:
- At the district level, the SHSC plans to move away from the current Substance Abuse Prevention model as no data was found supporting the current model.
- Funding allocation is set to prioritize the Teen Intervene afterschool program, which will purchase additional materials for the peer-intervention program for secondary schools.
- A long-term temperature check on the effectiveness of the program will be based on future physical and emotional safety scores for the district.

Trustees Approved the Washoe County School District Decision Process Related to Unexpected School Day Closures to Include the Timeline of Activities, Community, and Staff Notifications, and Event Cancellations and Impacts.
Trustees approved the Washoe County School District's decision process related to unexpected school day closures, including the timeline of activities, community and Staff Notifications, and event cancellations and impacts.
Highlights of the presentation included:
- Moving forward, before a closure occurs, the proposed timeline will result in a notification 24-48 hours in advance. Additionally, 30- to 90-minute windows will now be available based on when the event occurred to provide coherent and timely notice.
- Several modeled scenarios (i.e., delayed start, natural weather, power outages) and how the new response model will address each unique situation (e.g., alternative classroom plans during a power outage, alongside active monitoring and extracurriculars).
- The chain of events resulting in a school closer is now as follows: 1) Communication 2) District Staffing 3) Regional Conditions and Judgement 4) Real Time Information 5) Secondary Impacts (i.e., parents or transportation impacted), 6) Final Decision.

Trustees Received a Presentation on the Allocation of Instructional minutes to Support Student Learning and Achievement in Washoe County School District Elementary Schools.
Highlights of the presentation included:
- Washoe County reports the lowest approximate minutes (360 minutes per day) when compared to similar districts in Nevada Douglas County ( 384 min.), Carson City ( 410 min.), and Clark County (371).
- A massive schedule audit is underway in which all elementary schools schedules were submitted and reviewed to ensure instructional minutes were met across grade levels.
– A concern from public comment members was the amount of screentime involved in instructional minutes and how it is being tracked.

The Board of Trustees approved the sanctioning of High School Lacrosse as an Interscholastic Sport in the Washoe County School District's Central Administrative Operations
Highlights of the presentation included:
- Six current clubs exist and have been a longstanding part of the WCSD's available athletics programs.
- The High Sierra Lacrosse League (HSLL) is adamant in providing support and coaching with the transition to having lacrosse as an interscholastic sport.
- The competitive season will begin in the Spring of 2027 and the 2027 State Championship will occur in Southern Nevada.

The Board of Trustees received a presentation and approved the Administrative Facilities Master Plan (AFMP) Study and approved the AFMP as the guiding framework for the consolidation of the Washoe County School District's Central Administrative Operations
Highlights of the presentation included:
- What changed since the last update on the AFMP?
- Validated site opportunities on 9th street and Wooster schools.
- New ways to realign the Commodity Investment Plan (CIP) to the AFMP
- Decision made to take Wooster off of the table
- The AFMP includes four options or "pathways A-D" that intend to allow for more dynamic decision-making as the AFMP progresses.
- The primary outcomes are to make the process as intentional as possible and to select sites that are well-equipped with advanced technology and modernized facilities, which also allow central service teams to deliver exceptional service.

Pursuant to Board Policies 911(5)(b) and 9070(1)(b)(i)(2), the Board of Trustees denied the review of Board Policy 9088. Some trustees expressed concern regarding the lack of adherence to Board Policy 9088 and best practices surrounding balanced governance. Public comment expressed concerns for governance regarding the disagreements surrounding recent Board Policy decisions.
