Washoe County School District Board of Trustees

What is the Board of Trustees & what are they responsible for? The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees are publicly elected decision-makers for the school district. They are responsible for providing oversight to the Superintendent and establishing District-wide policy. Trustees are accountable to work with their communities to improve student achievement.

How often does the Board of Trustees meet? Trustees meet twice per month (second and fourth Tuesdays) at 2 pm both virtually and at the Central Administration Building Board Room, 425 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.

Can community members engage at Trustee meetings? Decision-making bodies benefit greatly from hearing public input and multiple perspectives. Currently, members of the public can submit comments on agenda and non-agenda items through email or voice recording. Public comment can be provided in person or via email. Email comments should be submitted to publiccomments@washoeschools.net.

Trustees selected various members of the Washoe County School Board to work with staff on selecting nominees for the Annual Nevada Association of School Boards Awards. The breakdown can be seen below:

School Administrator of the Year – Trustee Hull and Trustee Mayberry
School District Employee of the Year – Trustee Nicolet and Trustee Smith
District Level Administrator of the Year – Trustee Woodley and Trustee Hull
NASBY Director of the Year – Trustee Smith
Veteran Board Member of the Year – Trustee Smith

Trustees Approved Proposed Revisions to Board Policy 7086

 

Trustees approved proposed revisions to Board Policy 7086, school closure. This approval initiates the 13-day public review and comment period. Revisions to the policy include:

  • Proposed updates were to the language existing policy (permanent closure of a school)
  • New language for a fifth policy related to school closure or change of use or function was added as proposed language

Trustees Approved the District’s FY2026-2030 Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan

 

Trustees discussed the District’s Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan. Highlights of the plan and discussion included:

 

  • Financial breakdown of significant financing and funding sources
  • Highlighted the importance of funds toward playground materials, supporting learning through play for WCSD children
  • Foundation of the plan drives equitable data-driven upgrade,s balancing reinvestment, community engagement, and bold planning

Trustees Received an Update on the Outcomes of the 2025 Nevada Legislative Session

Highlights of the presentation included:

 

  • Success surrounding AB49 and AB386, proposed legislation passed
  • Pinyon Public Affairs will follow up at a later date with a more comprehensive overview regarding the holistic legislative session
  • Over 80% of the legislative items WCSD advocated for were approved

Student Representative Report

  • There was no student representative report

Trustees Report

Report highlights included:

  • Trustees attended several local graduations across grades K-12
  • Trustee Smith attended the Roy Gomm Elementary Lavish Art Fundraiser

Superintendent’s Report

Report highlights included:

  • Celebrating all the graduating students and schools for putting together such representative graduations, dependent on the diverse communities they serve

Public Comment

  • Concern regarding rejections and scheduling issues with high school schedules being balanced with Dual-Credit Enrollment courses at local colleges

The next Meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for June 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
