What is the Board of Trustees & what are they responsible for? The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees are publicly elected decision-makers for the school district. They are responsible for providing oversight to the Superintendent and establishing District-wide policy. Trustees are accountable to work with their communities to improve student achievement.

How often does the Board of Trustees meet? Trustees meet twice per month (second and fourth Tuesdays) at 2 pm both virtually and at the Central Administration Building Board Room, 425 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.

Can community members engage at Trustee meetings? Decision-making bodies benefit greatly from hearing public input and multiple perspectives. Currently, members of the public can submit comments on agenda and non-agenda items through email or voice recording. Public comment can be provided in person or via email. Email comments should be submitted to publiccomments@washoeschools.net.

Trustees Approved the Board of Trustees to Affirm as both a Board and Individual Trustees the Board's Governance Model "Balanced Governance"

 

Trustees approved the Board of Trustees to affirm as both a Board and individual Trustees the board's governance model "Balanced Governance", the Board's policies, and board protocols by practicing informed oversight and recognizing the board's delegation of daily operations to the Superintendent as found in the 9000 Series of board policies and, in particular, Board Policies 9050 and 9085.

 

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • Clarification on that Balanced Governance is determined by the relationship between the board and the superintendent and a clear understanding of those roles.
  • The board continues to take a stand in upholding balanced governance
  • Amended to include "students and the community" in the Balanced Governance model.

Trustees received a Presentation and Approved the Mid-Year Check on the Status of the Targets for the Annual Contractual Requirement for the Performance Evaluation of Joe Ernst, Washoe County School District Superintendent of Schools for the 2025-26 School Year

Trustees received a presentation and approved the mid-year check on the status of the targets for the annual contractual requirement for the performance evaluation of Joe Ernst, Washoe County School District Superintendent of Schools, for the 2025-26 school year.

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • All target ratings received a score of "Strong Progress".
  • A marginal increase (+0.3%) in high school students participating in at least one Advanced Course.
  • Several new 60-hour internships have been made available: City of Reno, PBS, Girls on the Run, School Police, and local engineering firms.

Trustees Provided Preliminary Approval to the Proposed Revisions of Board Policy 9300, Reporting of Fraud, Waste or Abuse, Related to Updating Processes, Definitions, and Clarifying Language

 

Trustees provided preliminary approval to the proposed revisions of Board Policy 9300, pertaining to the reporting of fraud, waste or abuse. Changes are related to updating processes, definitions, and clarifying language. The approval initiates the 13-day public review period.
