Washoe County School District Board of Trustees

What is the Board of Trustees & what are they responsible for? The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees are publicly elected decision-makers for the school district. They are responsible for providing oversight to the Superintendent and establishing District-wide policy. Trustees are accountable to work with their communities to improve student achievement.

How often does the Board of Trustees meet? Trustees meet twice per month (second and fourth Tuesdays) at 2 pm both virtually and at the Central Administration Building Board Room, 425 E. 9th St., Reno, NV 89512.

Can community members engage at Trustee meetings? Decision-making bodies benefit greatly from hearing public input and multiple perspectives. Currently, members of the public can submit comments on agenda and non-agenda items through email or voice recording. Public comment can be provided in person or via email. Email comments should be submitted to publiccomments@washoeschools.net.

Trustees Approved the Draft Board Policy 5800, Safe and Health Schools Commission (SHSC), and Initiation of the 13-day Public Review and Comment Period

 

Trustees approved the draft board policy 5800, Safe and Health Schools Commission, and initiation of the 13-day public review and comment period.

Highlights of the presentation included:

  • Following a tragedy at Sparks Middle School in 2013, the Board of Trustees initiated discussions about developing a safety committee.
  • The SHSC was previously nested in policy 9156 but was deleted when merged with Board Policy 7700.
  • It is now recommended SHSC receives its own board policy [Board Policy 5800].

Trustees Approved the Award of BID #23-37-B-10-DA, Construction of New Echo Loder Elementary School

 

Trustees approved the award of bid #23-37-B-10-DA, Construction of new Echo Loder Elementary School, to Plenium builders in the amount of $58,190,959.

 

Highlights of the presentation included:

 

  • Reviewed scope of work and budget aligned with the construction of the new Echo Loder Elementary.
  • All work contracted to be completed by March 1st

Trustees Approved the 2025/2026 "B" Major Projects Program for Construction Phase Funding for Libby Booth Elementary School

 

Trustees approved the 2025/2026 "B" Major Projects Program for construction phase funding for Libby Booth Elementary School for Total Amount of $21,900,000, as recommended by the Capital Funding Protection Committee.

Highlights of the presentation included:

 

  • History and overview of the project presented as well as an updated that the design was complete in October of 2025.
  • Discussed overview of services: site survey, architecture and engineering, Cost Estimating, Hazard Material Consultant, Roof Consulting.
  • Discussed next steps: design begins early 2026, construction in Fall of 2026, and improvements complete by Fall of 2027.

Student Representative's Report

Report highlights included:

  • The student advisory council is working on several group projects.
  • Pushing for college and career readiness to be more integrated into dual-credit enrollment courses.

Trustees Report

Report highlights included:

  • Attended the WCSD academy for breakout sessions and received staff input.
  • Plans to visit more specialty schools this year.
  • Trustee Smith and Trustee Hull attended the commission on recruitment & retention.

Superintendent's Report

Report highlights included:

  • Congratulating the newly appointed Secondary Director of Curriculum, Academics, and Instruction, Nicole Johnson.
  • Deep dive from the WCSD team on data occurred over the winter break to inform the second semester.

Public Comment

Public Comment included:

  • Introduction of a member of the public running for county commissioner.

 

The next Meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for January 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
