What is the State Board of Education & what are they responsible for? The Nevada State Board of Education adopts regulations based on Nevada laws, which are passed down to individual school districts in Nevada to implement. The Board has 11 total (7 appointed and 4 publicly elected) members.
How often does the State Board meet? The Nevada State Board of Education meets once per month on Wednesdays at 9:00 AM. Click here to see the 2025 meeting materials.
Can community members engage at State Board Meetings? A time for public comment is provided at the beginning (for agenda items) and at the conclusion (on any matter) of each Board meeting. Members of the public may provide public comment in writing via email; public comment will be accepted via email for the duration of the meeting and shared with the State Board of Education during the public comment periods. Public comment may be emailed to NVBoardED@doe.nv.gov.

What happened at the meeting?
Board Interviewed Six Finalists for State Superintendent
Over two days, the State Board of Education continued interviews with six finalists for the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Four candidates were interviewed on Thursday, August 28 (Dr. Darryl Wyatt, Dr. Lisa Coons, Dr. Victor Wakefield, and Ms. Amy Suman) and Friday, August 29 (Dr. Heather Sanchez and Dr. Sylvia Mitchell). The format was as follows for all candidates:

- Performance Task Presentation (15 minutes)
- Each candidate will present a performance task focused on student outcomes, budget alignment, and equity considerations. A 5-minute scoring period will follow for Board evaluation.
- Standardized Interview Questions
- Candidates will answer eight pre-assigned questions, each asked by a different Board Member in a consistent order. Topics include leadership, innovation, policy, equity, operations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Follow-Up Questions (Up to 10 minutes)
- Board Members may ask up to four clarifying questions per candidate. These must directly relate to the candidate’s responses and stay within the scope of the original prompts.
- Performance Task Presentation (15 minutes)

Board Voted to Send Three Finalists to the Governor for Final Consideration
After deliberating, the Board voted to move forward Dr. Victor Wakefield, Dr. Heather Sanchez, and Dr. Sylvia Mitchell for consideration to Governor Lombardo. The Governor will select the State Superintendent from those candidates.
The next regular meeting of the State Board of Education will be held on Wednesday, September 10, at 9:00 a.m.
