Trustees received a presentation and approved the purchase of high school mathematics instructional materials from Amplify Education (Algebra I) and Cengage Learning (Geometry and Algebra II) for the total approximate amount of $3,139,200.

  • Aligned with Goal 4, Academic Growth and Achievement of the WCSD Strategic Plan the curriculum was vetted by teachers of the district via special preview opportunities.

  • Following approval, the district will work with the Business & Finance teams to purchase the materials.

Trustees Approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) from Plenium Builders as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) #25-37-C-12-AA, The Virginia Palmer Elementary School Modernization Project 

Trustees approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) from Plenium Builders as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) #25-37-C-12-AA, The Virginia Palmer Elementary School Modernization Project, in the Amount of #15,760,443. Trustees also approved an owner's contingency in the amount of $1,000,000, for a Total of $16,760,443, and approved Washoe County School District's Owner-CMAR Construction Agreement.

Trustees Approved the 2025/2026 "C" Major Projects Program for Construction Phase Funding of the New Elementary School on the Current Edward L. Pine Middle School Campus

Trustees received a presentation and approved the 2025/2026 "C" Major Projects program for construction phase funding of the new elementary school on the current Edward L. Pine Middle School Campus for a total amount of $4,200,000, as recommended by the Capital Funding Committee.

Trustees Approved the Washoe County School District Fiscal Years 2027-2037, 10-year Capital Improvement Plan

Trustees received a presentation and approved the Washoe County School District Improvement Plan, for Capital project expenditures throughout the Washoe County School District, as recommended by the Capital Funding Committee.

  • The next two phases wilt take place between June 2026-May 2028 and include mass grading, ground source wells, new building construction, and site improvements.

Trustees Approved Option 2 of the Process for Selecting a Superintendent for the Washoe County School District (WCSD)

Trustees discussed and approved the process for selecting a superintendent for the WCSD, including the following options and selected the second option with revising the meeting date from April 28th to May 10th 2026. The options presented:

  • (1) Appoint WCSD Deputy Superintendent Tiffany McMaster as Interim Superintendent of WCSD, effective April 15, 2026, as part of succession planning related to the retirement of WCSD Superintendent Joe Ernst, and appoint Tiffany McMaster as WCSD Superintendent effective July 8, 2026, subject to negotiation and approval of an employment contract and successful review by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) regarding eligibility;
  • (2) Conduct a formal interview with the WCSD Deputy Superintendent Tiffany McMaster and take board action at the May 10, 2026 Board of Trustees meeting on the appointment of WCSD Deputy Superintendent Tiffany McMaster as Interim Superintendent of WCSD, as part of succession planning related to the retirement of WCSD Superintendent Joe Ernst, and appoint Tiffany McMaster as WCSD Superintendent effective July 8, 2026, subject to Negotiation and approval of an employment contract and successful review by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) regarding eligibility; or
  • (3) for staff to develop the scope and initiate the process to conduct a search for superintendent of WCSD and to return to the board with a proposed scope, process, timeline, and any necessary agreements, including any contract for a search firm, for board review and approval.

Trustees Approved Action to Revise the Outdoor Facility Design Elements

Trustees received a presentation and approved action to revise the outdoor facility design elements related to playground equipment, shade structures, hardscapes and courts, and track and field areas within current elementary and middle educational specifications.

  • A discussion sparked by public comment calling for more structures (i.e., swing sets and shade structures) to be included in the discussion of playground facilities during the revision process.
  • Additional costs surrounding design updates place costs at $50,000-$150,000 per project alongside additional annual maintenance and upkeep.
  • 29% of WCSD schools report having no shade structures which increases risk to sun and heat exposure related activities during play.
