Trustees passed a resolution recognizing May as National Mental Health Awareness Month.

Trustees Approved the Purchase of Middle and High School Social Studies Instructional Materials

Trustees approved the purchase middle and high school social studies instructional materials from National Geographic/Cengage. This is the first update to these materials since 2007. The cost of the materials is $4,510,000 and is covered by ESSER funds. Additional discussion on training, grade banding, and curriculum took place before approval.

Trustees Celebrated the Success of Students Attending Edward C. Reed High School

Staff and students provided an overview of the school’s successes, including a spotlight on Evelyn Maile, a junior involved in the school’s biomedical program who is a Skills USA officer and award winner, JROTC leader, and track and field athlete.

The school has seen an increase in its student and staff climate scores, as well as dual credit coursework enrollment and graduation rates, projecting an 85% graduation rate in 2023.

Areas of focus include increased preparation for ACT testing, increasing dual credit and CTE coursework, and building and grounds improvements.

Trustees Recognized May 8-12, 2023 as Educator Appreciation Week and May 9, 2023 as National Educator Day in the Washoe County School District

Trustees recognized May 8-12 as Educator Appreciation Week, with May 9 specially designated as National Educator Day.

Trustees Approved Board Policy 9100 Regarding Public Bodies

Trustees approved changes to Board Policy 9100, regarding public bodies and volunteers, and initiated the 13-day public review and comment period. Changes include:

  • Providing a definition on staff liaisons
  • Clarifying the role of staff liaisons and guidelines for contact to public bodies

Term limits in this policy were adjusted from five terms to three consecutive terms (page 5, item 4d). Allowed absences were adjusted from 50% to 33% of regularly scheduled meetings. The term “Reporting Structure” was removed from a recommendations section (page 5, item 6).

  • Acknowledgment of Educator Appreciation Week
  • Reaching the landmark of the Superintendent visiting every school in the District, as of early June
  • Appreciation for the team and Trustees on the Superintendent’s one-year anniversary with the District
