Trustees Held a Public Hearing on and Approved the FY 2025-26 Tentative Budget

 

The District held a public hearing on and approved the FY2025-26 tentative budget. Highlights of the budget presentation included:

 

  • Significant progress in reducing the budget deficit in lieu of the revenue shortfall regarding decisions surrounding Special Education
  • Concerns surrounding unfunded or underfunded mandates (e.g., professional services & transportation), general costs resulting in new financial pressures
  • Discussion regarding the inclusion of all parties involved (Staff Allocation and Gifted & Talented programs) in conversations surrounding the Academic Program and Staffing Restructuring that aim to reallocate the district’s resources more efficiently

Trustees Celebrated the Washoe County School District School Police Department’s Junior Cadet Program

 

Trustees received a presentation on and discussed the District’s School Police Department Junior Cadet Program. Highlights of the presentation included:

 

  • Showcase video that provided student perspectives and experiences surrounding the Junior Cadet Program
  • Testimonials from students at North Valleys, Hug, and Damonte Ranch High Schools regarding their positive experiences in the program

Trustees Approved the Award of a Request for Proposal for a Food Management Company

 

Trustees approved the award of an RFP for a good service management company, for a term beginning July 1, 2025, and ending June 30, 2026, to Southwest foodservice Excellence, LLC. The guaranteed return is $880,127, which includes reimbursement of costs in the estimated amount of $533,585.15 plus other reimbursable expenses.

Trustees Approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price 2 from Plenium Builders as the Construction Manager at Risk for Reed High School Modernization Project

Trustees approved the GMP2 from Plenium Builders as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Reed High School modernization project, in the amount of $68,697,213, as well as approved the owner’s contingency in the amount of $4,219,467, for a total of $72,916,680 and approved the District’s Owner-CMAR construction agreement.

Trustees Requested the Superintendent Return to the Board with Amendments to Board Policy 7086 to Provide Guidance when Determining Changes of Use for School Facilities

Trustees discussed potential changes to a policy regarding school closures, specifically the context surrounding solutions for repurposing and selecting schools for closure in line with ongoing Facilities Modernization Plan projects.

  • Attendance at the Collegiate Academy at the University of Nevada, Reno, with representation from eleven High Schools honoring students graduating with Dual Credits
  • Addressed and condemned the criminal events that occurred during the attack on Reno High

Pampublikong Komento

  • Concerns about sudden layoffs involving the Washoe Professional Technical Association (WPTA) have led to requests for extensions or substitute jobs within the district, along with a commitment from WPTA to support these efforts
  • Concerns regarding the incident at Reno High, ongoing behavior issues, and the impact on the learning environment
  • Members of the Washoe Education Association advocated for additional staff, assistance for crisis intervention, and district support in securing better working conditions for the staff of the WCSD

 

The next Meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for June 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
